Overview

The IFRC in the Pacific is striving to ‘cultivate’ sustained local capacities by investing in Pacific Red Cross National Societies, their staff and volunteers. These National Societies in turn endeavour to deliver country-wide services to vulnerable people. The IFRC provides assistance to those affected by disasters through the agency of National Societies in a spirit of cooperation with public authorities. Facilitating cooperation and coordination between Red Cross members, the wider International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and with other humanitarian actors is an essential component of the work of the regional office.

Small Island Pacific Red Cross National Societies have a combined network of more than 100 branches and relationships with hundreds of communities. Through their local volunteer-led branch networks, National Societies have the potential for greater reach into Pacific communities than any other civil society actor.
